Tripartite Structure of Training
Over a long tradition of psychoanalytic training the typical tripartite structure has become the norm and indeed is required by the Training Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association. This refers to the personal psychoanalysis, the supervised analytic work with patients and the classes of didactic instruction. Each of these arms of training is vitally important and hence required. Psychoanalysis cannot be taught in the classroom alone.
